Web Developer Salary FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about web developer pay, specialization differences, experience impact and remote work.
The main factors are years of experience, specialization (frontend, backend, full stack, or DevOps), location or cost of living, company size, and whether the role is remote or on-site. Niche skills in high-demand frameworks or cloud platforms can also push pay above the market average.
On average, backend and DevOps roles tend to command slightly higher salaries than frontend roles, largely because they often require deeper systems, database, and infrastructure knowledge. Full stack developers usually sit between the two, and the gap narrows significantly at senior levels.
Experience is one of the biggest drivers of pay. Entry-level developers typically earn well below the market midpoint, while senior developers can earn 30 to 40 percent more than mid-level peers. Lead or staff-level engineers with ten or more years of experience often earn 70 percent or more above the mid-level baseline.
It depends on the employer’s pay policy. Some companies pay a single global remote rate regardless of location, while others adjust pay to the employee’s local cost of living. Fully remote-first companies with location-independent pay tend to average somewhat below top-tier hub salaries but above many regional averages.
