Van Running Costs FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about van ownership, business expenses, and cost calculations.
Van running costs typically include fuel or electricity, vehicle insurance, road tax (VED), routine maintenance and servicing, tyre replacements, MOT fees, and vehicle depreciation.
To calculate your cost per mile, add up all your annual van running costs (fuel, insurance, tax, maintenance, depreciation) and divide that total by the number of miles you expect to drive in a year.
If you are self-employed or a business owner using the van exclusively for business purposes, most running costs (fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc.) can be claimed as allowable expenses against your taxable profits. If you also use it privately, you can only claim the business proportion.
While electric vans often have a higher upfront purchase price, their running costs are generally 50-70% lower than diesel vans. This is due to cheaper ‘fuel’ (electricity vs diesel), lower maintenance costs (fewer moving parts), and exemptions from certain congestion charges and lower Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates.
