Town Planner Salary FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about planner pay, progression and take-home income in the UK.

Pay varies widely by seniority, location and employer. As a broad guide, graduate and assistant planners often start in the high £20,000s to low £30,000s, mid-level planners typically earn in the mid to high £30,000s, senior planners in the £40,000s, and principal or associate-level planners can reach the £50,000s to £60,000s or more. Directors of private consultancies can earn considerably more. Figures in this calculator are indicative estimates, not official statistics.

The main factors are career level, years of experience, chartered status, the region you work in, and whether you are employed by a local authority or a private consultancy. Specialisms such as major infrastructure, heritage or development viability, and management responsibility can also raise pay.

Chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (MRTPI) is widely regarded as the professional standard and is often required for senior and principal roles. Many employers advertise higher salary bands for chartered planners, and it usually opens the door to progression.

The calculator deducts your workplace pension contribution from gross pay, then applies income tax at 20%, 40% and 45% above the £12,570 personal allowance (tapered for incomes over £100,000). Employee National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above that. It uses England, Wales and Northern Ireland tax rules, so Scottish taxpayers will see different results.

Salaries in London and the South East are generally higher than in other regions, reflecting a higher cost of living and stronger demand. Many London local authorities also pay a London weighting allowance. The regional adjustment in this calculator is an approximation, so always check the salary advertised on a specific role.
