How to Calculate a Test Grade
Working out a test grade by hand takes one division and one multiplication. Here is the formula and a worked example.
Test grade formula
If every question is worth one point, points earned is simply your number of correct answers and points possible is the total number of questions. If questions carry different marks, add up the marks you won and divide by the marks available.
Example: You answer 42 of 50 questions correctly. 42 ÷ 50 = 0.84, and 0.84 × 100 = 84%. On the standard scale that is a B (GPA 3.0).

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about calculating test scores, percentages, letter grades and GPA.
Divide the number of questions you answered correctly by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, 42 correct out of 50 questions is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%. You can then match that percentage to a letter grade using your school’s grading scale.
Add up the points you earned and divide by the total points available, then multiply by 100. If every question is worth the same number of points, enter that value in the ‘Points per question’ field and the calculator will do the rest.
Multiply the total number of questions by the percentage you can afford to lose. For an A at 90% on a 20-question test, you can miss 20 × 0.10 = 2 questions. On a 50-question test you can miss 5. If your school requires 93% for an A, the allowance is smaller.
On the most common scale, A is 90–100%, B is 80–89%, C is 70–79%, D is 60–69% and F is below 60%. Many schools also use plus and minus grades, such as A- for 90–92% and B+ for 87–89%. Always check your own school or course grading policy.
Yes, if your teacher offers extra credit. Enter the bonus points in the ‘Extra credit points’ field and the calculator adds them to your earned points, so your final percentage can go above 100%.
On a standard 4.0 unweighted scale, A equals 4.0, B equals 3.0, C equals 2.0, D equals 1.0 and F equals 0.0. With plus and minus grades, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B- is 2.7 and so on. Weighted GPAs for honours or AP classes add extra points.
