Pension Tax Relief FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about UK pension tax relief, claiming higher rate relief, and annual allowances.

The UK government encourages saving for retirement by adding tax relief to your pension contributions. For every £80 you contribute from your post-tax income, the government adds £20, making it £100 in your pension pot. Higher and additional rate taxpayers can claim further relief through their tax return or by contacting HMRC.

Under ‘Relief at Source’ (common in personal pensions and SIPPs), you contribute from post-tax income, the provider claims 20% basic relief, and higher/additional rate taxpayers must claim the rest. Under ‘Net Pay’ (common in workplace pensions), contributions are taken from your gross pay before tax, giving you immediate relief at your highest marginal tax rate automatically.

The standard Annual Allowance for the 2025/2026 tax year is £60,000, or 100% of your relevant UK earnings, whichever is lower. If you have triggered the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA) by flexibly accessing your pension, this limit drops to £10,000.

If your pension uses ‘Relief at Source’, your provider only claims the basic 20% rate. To claim the remaining 20% (higher rate) or 25% (additional rate), you must either complete a Self Assessment tax return or contact HMRC directly to have your PAYE tax code adjusted.
