Tax Refund FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about HMRC tax refunds, P800 calculations, and claiming overpaid tax.

You may be due a tax refund if you have overpaid tax through the PAYE system. Common reasons include being on an emergency tax code, having multiple jobs, stopping work mid-year, or having taxable benefits that were not correctly accounted for by your employer.

If you are due a refund, HMRC will usually send you a P800 or Simple Assessment letter after the end of the tax year. You can claim online through your Personal Tax Account. If you do not claim within 4 years, you may lose the right to that refund.

A P800 is a tax calculation sent by HMRC after the end of the tax year (usually between June and November). It compares the tax you actually paid with the tax you should have paid, showing whether you have overpaid (and are due a refund) or underpaid.

Yes. Emergency tax codes (like 1257L W1, M1, or X) do not apply your full annual Personal Allowance, often resulting in overpayment. Once your correct tax code is applied, any overpaid tax will usually be refunded automatically through your payroll or via a P800.
