For the 2024/2025 tax year, SMP is paid for up to 39 weeks. For the first 6 weeks, you receive 90% of your average weekly earnings. For the remaining 33 weeks, you receive £184.03 per week, or 90% of your average weekly earnings if that is lower.
The qualifying week is the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth. To qualify for SMP, you must have been employed continuously by your employer for at least 26 weeks up to and including this qualifying week.
For the 2024/2025 tax year, your average weekly earnings must be at least £123 (the National Insurance Lower Earnings Limit) to qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay. If you earn less than this, you may be eligible for Maternity Allowance instead.
Yes. If you are made redundant while on maternity leave, your employer is still legally required to pay your SMP for the full 39-week period, provided you met the eligibility criteria before the redundancy.
