Rounding Calculator

Rounding Calculator

Round any number to a chosen number of decimal places, a whole number, or the nearest 10, 100 or 1000 — and see how standard, up, down and banker’s rounding compare.

Round Your Number

Enter a number, choose the precision you want, and pick a rounding method to see the result — plus how the other methods would treat it.

Number Rounder

Round to any decimal place or place value, your way.

0
Rounded Result
Standard (round half up): 0
Round up (ceiling): 0
Round down (floor): 0
Round half to even (banker’s): 0
*All four methods are shown so you can see how the choice of rule affects halfway and borderline values.
⚠️ Important Note: Because computers store decimals in binary, some numbers can’t be represented exactly, which can occasionally shift a rounded result by the smallest possible amount. For financial or scientific work, always check which rounding rule your organisation or software expects.
1

Choose the Place Value

We look at the digit just past your chosen precision, whether that’s a decimal place or the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000.

2

Apply the Rounding Rule

Standard rounding rounds that digit up from 5 and above; ceiling always rounds up, and floor always rounds down, regardless of the digit.

3

Handle the Halfway Case

Exactly halfway values are where methods differ most: standard rounding rounds away from zero, while banker’s rounding rounds to the nearest even digit.

4

Compare the Methods

We calculate all four methods side by side, so you can see exactly where they agree and where they diverge for your number.

Rounding Calculator FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about rounding numbers and the different rounding methods.

Rounding is the process of simplifying a number to a nearby value at a chosen level of precision, such as the nearest whole number, the nearest 10, or a set number of decimal places. It makes numbers easier to read and work with, at the cost of some accuracy.

Round half up (standard rounding) always rounds a value exactly halfway between two numbers away from zero, so 2.5 becomes 3. Round half to even, also called banker’s rounding, rounds a halfway value to whichever neighbour is even, so 2.5 becomes 2 and 3.5 becomes 4. Banker’s rounding is often used in finance and statistics to reduce cumulative rounding bias.

Ceiling rounding (always rounding up) and floor rounding (always rounding down) are used when you need a guaranteed minimum or maximum, rather than the closest value. For example, calculating how many boxes are needed to pack a given quantity of items should round up, since a partial box still requires a whole box.

Different tools and programming languages sometimes use different rules for halfway values, and floating-point numbers can be stored with tiny precision errors that shift a result by the smallest possible amount. This is why the same input can occasionally produce a different rounded output depending on the method or software used.

No. Rounding to decimal places fixes the number of digits after the decimal point, regardless of the number’s size. Rounding to significant figures instead fixes the total number of meaningful digits in the number, including those before the decimal point, which better preserves relative precision for very large or very small numbers.
