Quiz Master Tips
How to maximise your pub quiz score
Never Leave a Blank
Even a wild guess has a chance of being right. A blank answer guarantees zero points.
Divide and Conquer
Assign team members to categories they know best (e.g., one person on sports, another on history).
Keep a Running Total
Use this calculator at the end of each round to track your momentum and see how close you are to the leaders.
Clarify the Rules
Always ask the quizmaster about tie-breaker rules and whether spelling mistakes will cost you a point before the quiz begins.

Pub Quiz Scoring FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about pub quiz rules, scoring, and tie-breakers.
To calculate a pub quiz score, simply add up the points earned in each individual round. If your quiz allows bonus points or has a tie-breaker round, add those to the total sum. The team with the highest final total wins.
A ‘good’ score depends on the quiz’s difficulty and the number of rounds. However, in a standard 8-round quiz with 10 questions per round, a score of 50-60+ is generally considered very strong and often enough to win or place in the top three.
Tie-breakers are usually handled by a final, specific question where teams must guess a number (e.g., ‘How many beans are in this jar?’). The team whose answer is closest to the actual number without going over (or just closest overall) wins the tie.
