Reading Your Payslip

A UK payslip can look like a confusing wall of numbers and abbreviations. Here is a simple, step-by-step breakdown of the most important sections you need to check every month.

1

Gross Pay

This is your total earnings before any deductions are made. It includes your basic salary, plus any overtime, bonuses, or commission earned during that specific pay period.

2

Tax Code

Your tax code tells your employer how much tax-free income you are entitled to. The most common code is 1257L, meaning you can earn £12,570 tax-free. The number multiplied by 10 equals your allowance.

3

Income Tax (PAYE)

PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the Income Tax deducted from your gross pay. It is calculated based on your tax code and only applies to earnings above your tax-free Personal Allowance.

4

National Insurance (NI)

Class 1 National Insurance contributions are deducted to fund state benefits, including the State Pension and NHS. For 2024/25, employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270.

5

Net Pay

This is your “take-home” pay. It is the final amount that will be deposited into your bank account after all statutory (tax, NI) and voluntary (pension, student loan) deductions have been subtracted from your gross pay.

6

Year-to-Date (YTD)

YTD shows the cumulative total of your gross pay, tax, NI, and net pay from the start of the tax year (6 April) up to the current payslip. It helps you track your annual earnings and ensure you are on the right tax trajectory.

💡 Pro Tip: Always check that your Tax Code and NI Category Letter (usually ‘A’) are correct. An incorrect tax code (like ‘BR’ or ‘0T’ when it shouldn’t be) can result in you overpaying tax, though HMRC usually issues a refund later.
Legal Right: Under the Employment Rights Act 1996, almost all workers in the UK have a legal right to receive an itemised payslip on or before payday.
Format: Payslips can be provided in physical paper format or electronically (e.g., via an employee portal or email), as long as they are accessible and itemised.
Fixed vs. Variable: If your pay is fixed, your employer can provide a single “standing statement” of fixed deductions once a year, rather than itemising them on every single payslip.
Keep Records: It is highly recommended to keep your payslips for at least the current tax year, and ideally up to 6 years, in case HMRC queries your income or you need to prove earnings for a mortgage.
⚠️ Emergency Tax: If you see ‘W1’ or ‘M1’ next to your tax code, you are on a non-cumulative emergency tax code. This is common when starting a new job without a P45. You will likely be refunded automatically once HMRC updates your record.
