Understanding UK Payroll Deductions
Your gross salary is reduced by several statutory and voluntary deductions. Here is the order in which HMRC and your employer calculate your net pay.
Apply Personal Allowance
Your tax-free allowance (typically £12,570) is subtracted from your gross salary. The remaining amount is your “taxable income”.
Calculate Income Tax
Tax is applied in bands: 20% on basic rate income, 40% on higher rate income, and 45% on additional rate income, based on your taxable earnings.
Deduct National Insurance
Class 1 Employee NI is calculated separately on your gross earnings, charging 8% on main earnings and 2% on earnings above the upper threshold.
Subtract Pension & Student Loans
Finally, your workplace pension percentage and any applicable student loan repayments (based on your specific plan threshold) are deducted to reveal your net pay.
