Income & Tax
💡 Pro Tip: Compare the “Income Tax Deducted” figure on your P60 with your cumulative payslips. If they do not match, contact your payroll department immediately, as you may be on an emergency tax code or have overpaid tax.
The Tax Year: The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year. Your P60 summarises exactly this period.
Statutory Pay: If you received Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) or Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), this will be listed in a separate box on your P60.
Mortgage Proof: Lenders typically require your last 3 months’ payslips AND your most recent P60 to verify your income for a mortgage application.
Multiple Jobs: If you worked for more than one employer during the tax year, you will receive a separate P60 from each employer.
⚠️ Keep it Safe: You should keep your P60s for at least 22 months after the end of the tax year they relate to, though keeping them for 6 years is recommended for HMRC inquiries.

Reading Your P60 Certificate

The P60 can look like a confusing wall of numbers. Here is how to navigate the document and understand what each section means for your finances.

1

Verify Personal Details

Check your name, address, and National Insurance number at the top. An incorrect NI number can lead to your tax contributions being misallocated by HMRC.

2

Check “Pay” vs “Taxable Pay”

“Pay in this period” is your total gross earnings. “Taxable Pay” might be slightly lower if you received tax-free expenses or mileage allowances during the year.

3

Review Tax & NI Deductions

Ensure the “Tax deducted” and “NI contributions” match the cumulative totals on your final March/April payslip. This confirms you paid the correct amount.

4

Check Student Loans & Pensions

If you have a student loan, your repayments will be listed here. Workplace pension contributions may also be shown, though sometimes these are handled outside the PAYE system.

P60 Explained FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the UK P60 end-of-year tax certificate and HMRC requirements.

A P60 is an official end-of-year certificate provided by your employer that summarises your total pay and deductions (Income Tax, National Insurance) for the UK tax year (6 April to 5 April). You need it to prove your income for mortgage applications, complete Self Assessment tax returns, or claim back overpaid tax from HMRC.

By law, your employer must provide you with a P60 by 31 May each year, following the end of the tax year on 5 April. It can be provided as a physical paper document or securely via email or an online payroll portal.

A P60 is a summary of your pay and tax for a full tax year with a specific employer, issued if you are still employed by them on 5 April. A P45 is issued when you leave a job, detailing your pay and tax up to your departure date so your new employer can apply the correct tax code.

If you lose your P60, you can ask your employer’s payroll department for a duplicate or a ‘Statement of Earnings’. Alternatively, you can view your complete employment and tax history for the year by logging into your Personal Tax Account on the GOV.UK website.
