Understanding NHS Dental Charges

NHS dental charges are designed to be transparent and predictable. Instead of paying for each individual procedure, you pay a single fixed charge for your entire course of treatment. Here is how the system works.

1

Initial Assessment

Your dentist will examine your mouth, discuss your dental health, and provide a written treatment plan. This plan will outline exactly what work is needed and which NHS band it falls under.

2

Band Classification

All NHS dental treatments are grouped into three standard bands. The band you are charged for depends on the most complex procedure in your treatment plan, not the total number of procedures.

3

Single Course Payment

You pay one fixed charge for the entire ‘course of treatment’. This covers all necessary work to complete the plan, even if it requires multiple appointments over several weeks or months.

4

Exemption Checks

Before paying, you should always check if you qualify for free NHS dental care or help with health costs. Your dental practice can provide an HC1 form to help you apply for financial assistance.

💡 Pro Tip: If you need additional treatment within 2 months of completing a course of NHS dental work, you usually will not be charged again for the same band, provided it is clinically necessary.
Age Criteria: You are under 18, or under 19 and in qualifying full-time education.
Pregnancy & Postpartum: You are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months (requires a valid maternity exemption certificate).
Hospital Patients: You are an NHS hospital dental service outpatient (note: this does not cover dental appliances like dentures).
Low Income: You or your partner receive certain qualifying income-related benefits, or you hold a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate.
NHS Low Income Scheme: You are named on a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2 certificate).
⚠️ Important Note: You may be asked to provide proof of your exemption status at the dental practice. If you cannot provide proof, you may be asked to pay the standard charge.

NHS Dental Treatment Bands

All NHS dental treatments are categorized into three bands. You are charged based on the highest band of treatment you receive in a single course of care.

Treatment Band What It Covers Charge Type
Band 1 Examination, diagnosis (including X-rays), advice on preventing future problems, scale and polish if clinically needed, and preventative care (e.g., fluoride varnish). Standard Fixed Charge
Band 2 Everything in Band 1, plus additional treatment such as fillings, root canal work, and tooth extractions. Standard Fixed Charge
Band 3 Everything in Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures such as crowns, dentures, bridges, and other laboratory-made appliances. Standard Fixed Charge
ℹ️ Note on Urgent Care: If you require urgent NHS dental treatment (e.g., to relieve pain, stop bleeding, or secure a dressing), this is typically classified under Band 1, regardless of the immediate procedure performed.
