💡 Pro Tip: For weed suppression and moisture retention, a depth of 5cm to 7.5cm is ideal. Avoid piling mulch directly against plant stems or tree trunks (known as “volcano mulching”), as this can cause rot.
Moisture Retention: A proper layer of mulch reduces water evaporation from the soil, meaning you will need to water your plants less frequently during dry spells.
Weed Suppression: Blocking sunlight from reaching the soil surface prevents most annual weed seeds from germinating, saving you hours of weeding.
Soil Health: Organic mulches (like bark chippings or compost) break down over time, adding valuable nutrients and improving soil structure.
Temperature Regulation: Mulch acts as an insulating blanket, keeping soil cooler in the summer and protecting roots from frost in the winter.
⚠️ Compaction Note: Organic mulches settle and decompose over time. The 10% wastage buffer in this calculator helps ensure you have enough material to top up the bed after it settles.

Understanding Mulch Volume

Calculating mulch is a straightforward volume measurement. Here is how the math translates to your garden.

1

Measure the Area

Multiply the length of your garden bed by its width (in metres) to find the total square metreage (m²) you need to cover.

2

Convert Depth to Metres

Divide your desired depth in centimetres by 100. For example, a 5cm depth becomes 0.05 metres.

3

Calculate Cubic Volume

Multiply the area (m²) by the depth (m) to get the volume in cubic metres (m³). Multiply this by 1,000 to convert to litres.

4

Determine Bag Count

Divide the total litres needed (including your wastage buffer) by the litre capacity of a single bag, rounding up to the nearest whole bag.

Mulch Calculator FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about calculating and applying garden mulch.

For most garden beds, a mulch depth of 5cm to 7.5cm (2 to 3 inches) is ideal. This is thick enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, but not so thick that it suffocates plant roots or prevents water from reaching the soil.

Multiply the length of the area (in metres) by the width (in metres) to get the square metreage. Then, multiply this by the desired depth (in metres, e.g., 5cm = 0.05m). The result is the volume in cubic metres.

Yes, it is highly recommended to add a 10% to 15% buffer to your total calculation. Mulch settles over time, and you may need extra to top up uneven areas or account for spillage during application.

There are exactly 1,000 litres in one cubic metre. If your calculation gives you a volume of 0.5 cubic metres, you will need 500 litres of mulch. If bags are sold in 70-litre sizes, you would need 8 bags (500 / 70 = 7.14, rounded up).
