How the ISA Allowance Works

Understanding the 2025/2026 limits

1

One Overall Limit of £20,000

The £20,000 allowance for 2025/2026 applies across all your ISAs combined, not per account — you choose how to split it between Cash, Stocks & Shares, Innovative Finance and Lifetime ISAs.

2

The Lifetime ISA Sub-Limit

You can pay a maximum of £4,000 into a Lifetime ISA each year. This £4,000 counts towards your overall £20,000 allowance rather than sitting on top of it.

3

Multiple ISAs Are Allowed

Since April 2024, you can pay into more than one ISA of the same type in a single tax year, as long as your combined contributions stay within the £20,000 limit.

4

The Allowance Resets Each Year

Unused allowance does not carry forward. It resets to £20,000 on 6 April at the start of each new tax year, so any portion left unused by 5 April is lost.

⚠️ Important Note: Junior ISAs have a separate £9,000 annual allowance for under-18s and do not count towards your own £20,000 adult ISA allowance.

You can pay a maximum of £4,000 into a Lifetime ISA each tax year, and this £4,000 counts towards your overall £20,000 ISA allowance rather than being an amount on top of it. The government adds a 25% bonus on contributions made.
