Fuel Benefit FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about company car fuel tax in the UK.

The fuel benefit charge is a tax applied when an employer provides fuel for a company car that is used for private journeys. It is calculated as a percentage of a set HMRC multiplier, based on the car’s CO2 emissions (the same percentage used for the company car Benefit in Kind tax).

The fuel benefit value is calculated by multiplying the HMRC fuel benefit multiplier (e.g., £27,800 for the 2024/25 tax year) by the car’s Benefit in Kind (BiK) percentage. Your personal tax payable is then calculated by applying your income tax rate (20%, 40%, or 45%) to this fuel benefit value.

If you pay for all your own private fuel using your own money (and can keep receipts as proof if requested by HMRC), the fuel benefit charge is £0. You should inform your employer or HMRC to ensure you are not incorrectly taxed.

Indirectly, yes. The fuel benefit uses the same Benefit in Kind (BiK) percentage as the company car itself. Electric cars have a much lower BiK percentage (e.g., 2% for 2024/25), resulting in a significantly lower fuel benefit charge compared to petrol or diesel cars with higher CO2 emissions.
