Fence Calculator FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about measuring and planning a fencing project.

Divide the total length of your fence run by the width of a single panel, then round up to the nearest whole number. For example, a 20 metre run using 1.83 metre panels needs 11 panels (20 ÷ 1.83 = 10.9, rounded up). Deduct the width of any gate opening from the total length first.

You generally need one more post than the number of panels, since posts sit at both ends of every panel and are shared between adjacent panels. A run of 11 panels needs 12 posts. Add two extra posts if you are including a gate, since gates usually need their own dedicated pair of posts.

A typical fence post needs around two 20kg bags of post-mix concrete for a standard hole roughly 450-600mm deep. Larger posts, taller fences, or exposed/windy sites may need a deeper hole and a third bag per post.

Post spacing is set by your panel width, since each panel slots between two posts. Standard UK fence panels are commonly 1.83m (6ft), making that the typical post-to-post spacing. Closeboard and picket fencing built without pre-made panels are usually installed with posts every 2.4-3m.
