Date Difference FAQ
Everything you need to know about calculating the time between two dates.
Subtract the earlier date from the later date to get the total number of days. Most calculators convert both dates into a day count from a fixed reference point and find the difference, which automatically accounts for varying month lengths and leap years.
By default, most date difference calculations count the number of full days between the start and end date, excluding the start date itself. You can choose to include both the start and end date if you need an inclusive day count, which adds one extra day to the total.
Total days counts every calendar day between two dates, including weekends. Business days counts only weekdays, Monday through Friday, and excludes Saturdays and Sundays, which is useful for estimating working time or project deadlines.
Leap years add an extra day, 29 February, roughly every four years. A day count calculation automatically accounts for this because it works from the actual calendar rather than assuming every year has the same number of days.
