Cryptocurrency Tax FAQ

Everything you need to know about how HMRC taxes cryptocurrency in the UK.

Yes. HMRC treats most crypto assets as property, not currency. Selling, swapping, spending, or gifting crypto (other than to a spouse or civil partner) is normally a disposal for Capital Gains Tax purposes. Crypto received from mining, staking, airdrops, or as employment income can also be taxed as income instead.

Every individual has a tax-free Capital Gains Tax allowance, called the Annual Exempt Amount, currently £3,000 per tax year. Total gains across all assets, including crypto, above this allowance are taxable. There is no separate crypto-only allowance.

For disposals made on or after 30 October 2024, individuals pay 18% on gains that fall within their remaining basic rate Income Tax band, and 24% on gains above it. The rate you pay depends on your total taxable income plus your gains for the year.

You generally need to report crypto gains via Self Assessment if your total gains exceed the Annual Exempt Amount, or if your total proceeds from disposals exceed £50,000 in the tax year, even if no tax is owed. Income from mining, staking or airdrops is usually reported as miscellaneous or employment income.
