Stableford points explained
Stableford is a points-based scoring format used in golf competitions worldwide. Unlike stroke play, where every shot counts against you, Stableford rewards you for good holes — and limits damage on bad ones by awarding zero points rather than piling up strokes.
Your playing handicap determines how many extra strokes you receive across the round. These are allocated hole-by-hole based on Stroke Index (SI) — the hardest hole gets SI 1, the easiest gets SI 18. If your handicap is 18, you get one stroke on every hole.
Your net score is your gross score minus any strokes received on that hole. Points are then awarded based on how your net score compares to par.
| Net Score vs Par | Name | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 3 under par or better | Albatross | 6 |
| 2 under par | Eagle | 5 |
| 1 under par | Birdie | 4 |
| Level par | Par | 3 |
| 1 over par | Bogey | 2 |
| 2 over par | Double bogey | 1 |
| 3+ over par | No return | 0 |
Stableford FAQs
What is a good Stableford score?
Par is worth 3 points per hole, so 54 points over 18 holes represents a level-par round. A score of 36 points (2 per hole — all bogeys) is the usual target for club competitions. Anything above 36 is a good round; 40+ is excellent.
How are strokes received calculated?
Your playing handicap is spread across the 18 holes using the Stroke Index. A handicap of 18 gives 1 stroke on every hole. A handicap of 9 gives 1 stroke on the 9 hardest holes (SI 1–9). Handicaps above 18 give 2 strokes on some holes.
What is the difference between handicap index and playing handicap?
Your Handicap Index is your portable measure of ability, stored with your home club. Your playing handicap is adjusted for course difficulty (Course Rating and Slope) and is what you use on the day. Enter your playing handicap in this calculator.
What if I don’t complete a hole?
Leave the gross score blank or enter 0 for that hole. The calculator will award 0 points (no return), which is correct for Stableford — unfinished holes simply don’t contribute to your total.
Can I use this for a 9-hole round?
Yes — just fill in holes 1–9 (or 10–18 for the back nine) and leave the rest blank. The total will reflect only the holes you’ve entered.
