Cat Age FAQ

Everything you need to know about feline ageing and life stages.

A cat’s first year of life is roughly equivalent to 15 human years, the second year adds around 9 more, and every year after that adds approximately 4 human years. This gives a much more accurate picture than the old rule of multiplying by seven.

No. The multiply-by-seven rule is a popular myth that does not reflect how cats actually age. Cats mature very quickly in their first two years and then age more slowly, so a tiered formula gives a far more realistic human-year equivalent.

Veterinary guidelines generally divide a cat’s life into six stages: kitten (0 to 6 months), junior (6 months to 2 years), prime (3 to 6 years), mature (7 to 10 years), senior (11 to 14 years), and geriatric (15 years and older).

Most veterinary associations classify a cat as a senior from around 11 years of age, which is roughly equivalent to a person in their early sixties. Senior cats generally benefit from more frequent health checks.
