Carpet Measurement FAQ

Everything you need to know about measuring rooms, calculating waste, and ordering carpet.

It is standard practice to add 10% to 15% extra material for waste. This accounts for cutting, seaming, pattern matching, and irregular room shapes. For simple rectangular rooms, 10% is usually sufficient. For complex layouts or patterned carpets, 15% to 20% is recommended.

In the UK and US, the most common standard carpet roll widths are 12 feet (approx. 3.66 metres) and 15 feet (approx. 4.57 metres). Some specialty carpets may come in 13’6″ widths. Always confirm the exact roll width with your supplier before finalising your order.

Since carpet is often priced and sold by the square yard, you can convert square feet to square yards by dividing the total square footage by 9. For example, a 180 sq ft room requires 20 square yards of carpet (before adding waste allowance).

Divide the L-shaped room into two separate rectangular sections. Measure the length and width of each rectangle individually, calculate the square footage for both, and then add them together. Finally, apply your waste percentage to the combined total.
