BMI & IMC FAQ

Everything you need to know about Body Mass Index, weight categories, and health metrics.

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and IMC is its French and Spanish equivalent (Indice de Masse Corporelle / Índice de Masa Corporal). It is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight to estimate body fat and categorize weight status.

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]².

For most adults, a healthy BMI range is between 18.5 and 24.9. A BMI below 18.5 is considered underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classified as obese.

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, meaning athletes or very muscular individuals may have a high BMI without having excess body fat. It is also less accurate for the elderly, pregnant women, and growing children.
