The BIDMAS Rule Explained

The order of operations is a set of rules that dictates the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed to ensure a single, correct result.

Letter Operation Symbol(s) Priority
BBrackets( )1st (Highest)
IIndices (Powers/Roots)², ³, √2nd
D / MDivision & Multiplication÷, /, ×, *3rd (Left to Right)
A / SAddition & Subtraction+, –4th (Left to Right)
⚠️ Important Note: Division and Multiplication share the same priority level, as do Addition and Subtraction. When they appear together, you must evaluate them strictly from left to right, not multiplication before division or addition before subtraction.

BIDMAS FAQ

Everything you need to know about the order of operations and how to apply it correctly.

BIDMAS is an acronym used to remember the order of operations in mathematics. It stands for Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.

Both are correct and mean the same thing. BIDMAS uses ‘Indices’ while BODMAS uses ‘Orders’ (referring to powers and square roots). They both dictate the exact same order of operations.

Yes. Multiplication and Division share the same level of priority. When both appear in an expression, you evaluate them from left to right, whichever comes first.

Negative numbers are treated as part of the value they are attached to. For example, in the expression 5 + (-3 * 2), you first calculate the multiplication inside the implicit grouping (-3 * 2 = -6), and then add it to 5, resulting in -1.
