Real-World Acceleration Examples

Typical acceleration values for everyday motion and physics scenarios, to help put your own result into context.

Scenario Acceleration (m/s²) In “g” (× gravity)
Car, 0-60 mph in 6 seconds4.47 m/s²0.46 g
Free fall on Earth9.81 m/s²1.00 g
Sprinter off the blocks~6 m/s²0.61 g
Passenger jet takeoff roll~2.5 m/s²0.25 g
Formula 1 car braking~50 m/s²5.10 g
Rocket launch (early stage)~15-30 m/s²1.5-3.0 g
⚠️ Important Note: Acceleration is a vector, so direction matters. A negative result means the object is slowing down (decelerating) or accelerating in the opposite direction to the one you defined as positive.

Acceleration Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating acceleration from velocity and time.

Acceleration is calculated using the formula a = (v – u) / t, where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, and t is the time taken for the change in velocity. The result is expressed in metres per second squared (m/s²).

Velocity measures how fast an object is moving and in what direction, expressed in units like metres per second. Acceleration measures how quickly that velocity is changing over time, expressed in metres per second squared, so it describes speeding up, slowing down, or changing direction.

Negative acceleration, often called deceleration, means an object’s velocity is decreasing over time, such as a car braking. It can also mean the object is accelerating in the opposite direction to its current motion, depending on the chosen reference direction.

Force and acceleration are linked by Newton’s second law, F = ma, where F is force in newtons, m is mass in kilograms, and a is acceleration in metres per second squared. For a fixed mass, a larger force produces a larger acceleration.
