Flow Rate Conversion FAQ
Everything you need to know about converting between litres per minute and gallons per hour.
First multiply the litres per minute value by 60 to get litres per hour, then divide by the litres in one gallon. For US liquid gallons, divide by 3.785411784. For UK imperial gallons, divide by 4.54609. For example, 10 L/min equals 158.5 US gal/hr or 132.0 UK gal/hr.
A US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres, while a UK imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres, making the UK gallon about 20% larger. Because of this, the same flow rate produces a smaller number of UK gallons per hour than US gallons per hour.
Flow meters, taps and pump datasheets often report short-term flow in litres per minute, but tank filling times, water bills and irrigation planning are usually calculated in gallons per hour. Converting to an hourly rate makes it easier to size tanks, pumps and billing periods.
A standard kitchen tap flows at around 6 to 8 litres per minute, a shower head around 8 to 10 litres per minute, a garden hose around 10 to 15 litres per minute, and a domestic washing machine fill valve around 12 to 15 litres per minute.
