Common Mbps to MB/s Conversions

Standard conversions for quick lookup when comparing your advertised internet plan against the download speed shown by your browser or operating system.

Mbps MB/s Typical Use Case
10 Mbps1.25 MB/sBasic browsing, SD video
25 Mbps3.13 MB/sHD streaming, light households
50 Mbps6.25 MB/sMultiple devices, HD streaming
100 Mbps12.5 MB/sStandard fibre/broadband plan
200 Mbps25 MB/s4K streaming, larger households
300 Mbps37.5 MB/sFast fibre, remote work
500 Mbps62.5 MB/sGaming, large file transfers
1000 Mbps (1 Gbps)125 MB/sGigabit fibre connection
⚠️ Important Note: Internet providers advertise speed in Mbps (megabits per second), but browsers, download managers and operating systems usually display transfer speed in MB/s (megabytes per second). A “100 Mbps” plan has a theoretical maximum of 12.5 MB/s, not 100 MB/s.

Internet Speed Conversion FAQ

Everything you need to know about the difference between megabits and megabytes per second.

Mbps stands for megabits per second and is the unit internet providers use to advertise connection speed. MB/s stands for megabytes per second and is the unit most operating systems use to show download or file transfer speed. There are 8 bits in a byte, so 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps.

Internet providers advertise speed in megabits per second (Mbps), but file managers and browsers usually display transfer speed in megabytes per second (MB/s). A 100 Mbps connection has a theoretical maximum of 12.5 MB/s, since 1 byte equals 8 bits, which is why the displayed number looks much lower.

To convert megabits per second (Mbps) to megabytes per second (MB/s), divide the Mbps value by 8. For example, 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. To convert MB/s to Mbps, multiply by 8.

The Mbps-to-MB/s conversion gives a theoretical maximum. Actual speeds are usually lower due to network overhead, Wi-Fi signal strength, server-side limits, other devices sharing the connection, and general network congestion.
