Common GiB to GB Conversions

Standard conversions for quick lookup when comparing advertised storage capacity versus operating system reported capacity.

Gibibytes (GiB) Gigabytes (GB) Common Use Case
1 GiB1.07 GBSmall file or legacy RAM
4 GiB4.29 GBEntry-level device RAM
8 GiB8.59 GBStandard laptop RAM
16 GiB17.18 GBModern gaming PC RAM
32 GiB34.36 GBHigh-performance workstation
64 GiB68.72 GBProfessional content creation
128 GiB137.44 GBEntry-level SSD storage
256 GiB274.88 GBStandard laptop SSD
512 GiB549.76 GBMid-range SSD storage
1024 GiB (1 TiB)1,099.51 GBLarge external hard drive
⚠️ Important Note: Operating systems like Windows report storage in GiB but often label it as “GB”, causing confusion. A “500 GB” hard drive actually contains 500,000,000,000 bytes, which Windows displays as ~465 GiB. Mac OS (since 10.6) correctly uses decimal GB for display.

Data Storage Conversion FAQ

Everything you need to know about the difference between binary and decimal data storage measurements.

GB (Gigabyte) is a decimal unit equal to 1,000³ (1,000,000,000) bytes, as defined by the SI system. GiB (Gibibyte) is a binary unit equal to 1,024³ (1,073,741,824) bytes, as defined by the IEC. Therefore, 1 GiB is approximately 7.37% larger than 1 GB.

Hard drive manufacturers advertise capacity using decimal Gigabytes (GB). However, operating systems like Windows calculate and display storage using binary Gibibytes (GiB). Dividing 500,000,000,000 bytes by 1,073,741,824 results in approximately 465 GiB. No storage is actually missing; it is just a difference in measurement standards.

To convert Gibibytes (GiB) to Gigabytes (GB), multiply the GiB value by 1.073741824. For example, 16 GiB × 1.073741824 = 17.1798 GB. To convert GB to GiB, multiply by 0.9313225746.

RAM is inherently binary in its architecture, so it is technically measured in GiB. However, manufacturers often colloquially label it as ‘GB’ on packaging. Hard drives and SSDs are marketed using decimal GB, but operating systems display their usable space in GiB (often mislabelled as GB by Windows).
