Fence Panel Calculator FAQ
Everything you need to know about working out panels, posts and materials for your fence.
Divide the total length of fencing you need by the width of one panel, then round up to the nearest whole number. For example, a 20 metre run using standard 1.83 metre wide panels needs 11 panels to cover the distance, with the final panel or post spacing adjusted to fit.
You generally need one more post than the number of panels, since each panel sits between two posts and neighbouring panels share a post. A run of 11 panels typically needs 12 posts, with extra posts added for any gates.
As a general guide, one 20kg bag of postcrete or similar fast-setting concrete is enough for a smaller post hole, while larger or taller posts often need two bags each to set them firmly. Always check the product guidance for your specific post size and soil type.
Gravel boards are recommended along the base of a fence to keep the panels off the ground, which helps prevent rot and extends the life of the fence. You typically need one gravel board per panel bay, matched to the same width as the fence panels.
