Equine Weight Estimation FAQ
Everything you need to know about measuring your horse and calculating their bodyweight accurately.
Wrap a soft, flexible measuring tape around the horse’s barrel, just behind the withers and the elbows. Ensure the tape is snug but not tight, and lies flat against the coat. Take the measurement just after the horse exhales for the most consistent result.
Measure in a straight line from the point of the shoulder (the front of the chest) to the point of the buttock (the rear edge of the hindquarters). Ensure the horse is standing square on level ground for the most accurate reading.
When measurements are taken correctly, formula-based calculators and weight tapes are generally accurate within 5% to 10% of a horse’s actual weight. While not a replacement for a certified weigh bridge, they are highly reliable for tracking weight trends over time, calculating feed rations, and determining standard dewormer dosages.
Knowing your horse’s weight is crucial for calculating accurate daily feed rations, determining the correct dosage for medications and dewormers, monitoring health and body condition over time, and ensuring safe loading limits for horse trailers.
