Bark Chippings Weight FAQ
Everything you need to know about converting bark chippings volume to weight for your landscaping project.
One cubic metre of loose bark chippings typically weighs between 0.15 and 0.25 metric tonnes, depending on chip size and moisture. Fine, compacted chippings can weigh up to 0.30 tonnes per cubic metre.
Multiply the volume in cubic metres by the material’s density in tonnes per cubic metre. For loose chunky bark chippings, use a density of roughly 0.20 t/m³, so 2 m³ would weigh approximately 0.4 tonnes.
Measure the length and width of the area in metres and multiply by the desired depth in metres: Volume = Length × Width × Depth. A path 6m long, 1m wide, and 0.07m (7cm) deep needs 0.42 m³ of chippings.
At a typical depth of 7cm, 1 tonne of chunky bark chippings (around 0.20 t/m³) covers roughly 7 square metres. Shallower coverage of 5cm stretches a tonne further, to around 9-10 square metres.
