Clean Air Zone FAQ

Everything you need to know about Clean Air Zones, vehicle compliance, and avoiding penalty charges.

A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area where targeted action is taken to improve air quality. Vehicles that do not meet specific emission standards (typically Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel) are charged a daily fee to enter or drive within the zone.

Generally, petrol cars registered after 2005 (Euro 4) and diesel cars registered after September 2015 (Euro 6) are compliant. You can verify your vehicle’s exact status using the official government vehicle checking service or your local council’s CAZ website.

Residency does not automatically exempt you from CAZ charges. However, some local authorities offer a temporary grace period or a residents’ discount scheme for non-compliant vehicles. You must apply for this through your local council.

If you drive a non-compliant vehicle in a Clean Air Zone without paying the daily charge, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). The fine is typically £120, which may be reduced by 50% if paid within 14 or 28 days, depending on the local authority.
