The absolute minimum space required per chicken in an enclosed run is 1.0 square meter. However, 2.5 square meters per bird is highly recommended for a healthy, stress-free flock. If you aim for free-range conditions within the run, 4.0 square meters or more per chicken is ideal.
While total square footage is the most critical factor, the shape does matter for chicken behaviour. Long, rectangular runs encourage natural foraging and running, which is much better for their physical and mental health than small, square, or circular enclosures.
Yes. If your chickens have access to a large garden or pasture during the day to forage, the enclosed run is primarily used for sleeping, laying, and protection from predators. In this case, you can lean towards the lower end of the space requirements (around 1.0 to 1.5 sq m per bird), provided the coop itself is adequately sized.
