Buffet Portions FAQ

Everything hosts and caterers ask about planning buffet quantities.

For a standard buffet meal, plan for roughly 1 to 1.25 pounds (450-570g) of food per adult across all courses, split between mains, sides, and salads. Light appetizer-style events need less, around 0.5-0.75 lb per person, while hearty dinner buffets can run closer to 1.5 lb per person.

For a cocktail-only event with no meal, plan 4-6 appetizer pieces per person per hour. If the cocktail hour precedes a full meal, 2-3 pieces per person is usually enough. For a heavy-appetizers-as-dinner event, plan 8-12 pieces per person.

Plan for 6-8 oz (170-225g) of boneless meat per adult, or 8-10 oz (225-280g) if the meat is bone-in, such as chicken wings or ribs. If meat is one of several main dishes rather than the only option, 4-6 oz per person is typically sufficient.

For a standard event, plan 1 drink per guest per hour. For a 3-hour reception, that’s about 3 drinks per person. For non-alcoholic beverages like soda, water, and juice, plan 2-3 servings per guest for the full event, more in hot weather.

Yes. Children typically eat about half to two-thirds of an adult portion. Most caterers count 2 children as roughly 1 adult guest when calculating total food quantities, though this varies by age range and event type.

Most caterers recommend ordering 10-15% more food than the calculated per-guest amount to account for uneven serving, larger appetites, and unexpected extra guests. For a plated or heavily portion-controlled buffet, 5-10% extra is usually enough.

Yes. When you offer more than one main dish, guests naturally take smaller portions of each since they’re sampling multiple options. With two mains, plan roughly 60-65% of a single-main portion for each dish; with three or more, plan around 40-45% each.
