Singapore’s Three-Account Retirement System

The Central Provident Fund (CPF) is Singapore’s mandatory social security scheme. Every working Singapore Citizen and Permanent Resident contributes a percentage of their salary — matched by their employer — into three dedicated accounts for housing, retirement, and healthcare.

🏠

Ordinary Account (OA)

Used for housing, insurance, education, and investment. Earns 2.5% p.a. interest. Receives the largest share of contributions while you’re under 55.

🎯

Special / Retirement Account

Reserved for retirement and contingency needs. Earns 4.0% p.a. For members 55+, this becomes the Retirement Account (RA) after the 2025 SA closure.

🏥

Medisave Account (MA)

Used for hospitalisation, approved medical insurance, and outpatient treatments. Earns 4.0% p.a. Allocation increases as you age to fund healthcare needs.

CPF Calculator FAQ

Everything Singapore employees and employers ask about CPF contributions, rates, and account allocation in 2026.

CPF contribution is calculated as a percentage of your monthly ordinary wages, capped at the CPF salary ceiling (S$8,000 per month in 2026). Both you (employee) and your employer contribute. The total rate depends on your age group — for example, employees aged 55 and below pay 37% total (20% employee + 17% employer) on wages up to S$8,000. If your salary exceeds S$8,000, contributions are still only computed on the first S$8,000.

The CPF monthly ordinary wage ceiling is S$8,000 as of January 2026, up from S$7,400 in 2025 and S$6,800 in 2024. This means CPF contributions are only calculated on the first S$8,000 of your monthly salary. Any wages above this ceiling are not subject to CPF. The additional wage ceiling (for bonuses) remains at S$6,000 per year.

For Singapore Citizens and 3rd-year PRs: age ≤55 is 37% (20% employee + 17% employer); age 55–60 is 32.5% (17% + 15.5%); age 60–65 is 21.5% (11.5% + 10%); age 65–70 is 16.5% (7.5% + 9%); and age above 70 is 12.5% (5% + 7.5%). Rates taper down for older workers to encourage continued employment.

From early 2025, the CPF Board closed the Special Account (SA) for members aged 55 and above. Their SA savings were transferred to their Retirement Account (RA) up to the Full Retirement Sum, with any excess moved to the Ordinary Account (OA). For members below 55, SA remains active and continues to receive contributions. New contributions for those 55+ now go to the RA instead of SA.

For employees aged 55 and below in 2026: approximately 63.62% of total contributions go to the Ordinary Account (OA), 17.58% to the Special Account (SA), and 18.80% to the Medisave Account (MA). These allocation ratios shift with age, with more directed to healthcare (MA) and retirement (RA) as you get older. Our calculator handles this allocation automatically based on your age group.

Yes, but at lower rates during their first two years of PR status. In year 1 and 2 as a PR, both employee and employer contributions are reduced (e.g. employee pays 5% instead of 20% in year 1, and employer pays a transitional rate). From the 3rd year onwards, PRs contribute at the same rates as Singapore Citizens. Our calculator lets you select your residency status to apply the correct rates.

The CPF annual contribution ceiling is S$37,740. This limits the total amount of mandatory and voluntary CPF contributions you can receive in a calendar year. If your combined ordinary and additional wage contributions hit this cap, no further CPF is payable for that year. The calculator flags when your projected contributions approach this ceiling.

CPF is mandatory for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents earning more than S$50 per month. It does not apply to foreign workers on work permits, employment passes, or S-passes. Self-employed Singaporeans must only contribute to Medisave (not OA or SA), unless they voluntarily opt in. The scheme is governed by the CPF Act and enforced by the CPF Board.

Bonuses are classified as “additional wages” for CPF purposes. CPF is payable on bonuses but subject to a separate Additional Wage (AW) ceiling of S$6,000 per year, after accounting for any unused ordinary wage ceiling. The formula is: AW subject to CPF = min(Bonus, $6,000 − unused OW ceiling). The same age-based contribution rates apply.

As of 2026, OA earns 2.5% p.a., SA and RA earn 4.0% p.a., and MA earns 4.0% p.a. Members below 55 also receive an extra 1% interest on the first S$60,000 of combined balances (with up to S$20,000 from OA), boosting effective returns to 3.5% on OA and 5% on SA/RA for those amounts. These are guaranteed, risk-free rates backed by the Singapore government.
