SWP FAQ

Everything Indian mutual fund investors ask about Systematic Withdrawal Plans before starting one.

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) is a facility offered by mutual fund houses that allows investors to withdraw a fixed amount at regular intervals (usually monthly) from their existing mutual fund investment. It is the mirror image of an SIP — instead of investing periodically, you withdraw periodically, making it ideal for retirees and those seeking regular income.

SWP offers three key advantages over FDs: potentially higher post-tax returns through equity fund growth, better tax efficiency since only the capital gains portion is taxed (not the principal withdrawn), and capital appreciation of the remaining corpus. Unlike FD interest which is fully taxable at slab rates, SWP withdrawals from long-held equity funds attract only 12.5% LTCG tax above ₹1.25 lakh per year.

Yes, SWP withdrawals are taxable but only on the capital gains component, not the entire withdrawal. Each SWP redemption is treated as a partial sale of mutual fund units. For equity funds held over 12 months, gains are taxed at 12.5% LTCG (₹1.25 lakh exemption annually). Short-term gains are taxed at 20%. For debt funds purchased after 1 April 2023, all gains are taxed at your income slab rate.

Financial planners generally recommend a sustainable SWP rate of 4–6% of the corpus per year. For example, on a ₹1 crore corpus, withdrawing ₹40,000–₹50,000 per month (4.8–6% annually) is typically sustainable for 20+ years even with moderate equity returns. Withdrawing more than 8% annually risks depleting the corpus early unless returns are unusually high.

Yes, if your mutual fund’s annual return exceeds your withdrawal rate, the corpus will actually grow despite regular withdrawals. For instance, a ₹1 crore corpus earning 12% annually with a 6% withdrawal rate (₹50,000/month) will grow in value over time. This is why equity-oriented SWPs often outlive their investors.

Corpus longevity depends on three factors: initial corpus size, monthly withdrawal amount, and the fund’s rate of return. If withdrawal rate exceeds return rate, the corpus will exhaust — this calculator shows the exact number of months it will last. If returns exceed withdrawals, the corpus is effectively sustainable indefinitely and will grow in value.

Balanced Advantage Funds (BAFs), conservative hybrid funds, and large-cap equity funds are commonly used for SWPs. BAFs are popular because they dynamically shift between equity and debt, reducing volatility. Pure debt funds offer stability but lower returns; pure equity funds offer growth but higher volatility. Most retirees choose a 65:35 equity-to-debt allocation for SWP.

Most mutual fund houses allow SWP to start from a minimum investment of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, with minimum monthly withdrawal of ₹500 to ₹1,000. However, for meaningful income, most investors set up SWP on a corpus of at least ₹5–10 lakhs to generate ₹20,000–₹40,000 per month.
