Redundancy Pay FAQ
Everything you need to know about statutory redundancy pay in the UK.
Statutory redundancy pay is calculated based on your age, length of continuous service (up to 20 years), and weekly pay (capped at £700 as of April 2026). You receive half a week’s pay for each year you were under 22, one week’s pay for each year between ages 22-40, and one and a half weeks’ pay for each year aged 41 or over.
The maximum statutory redundancy payment in 2026 is £21,000. This is calculated using the maximum weekly pay cap of £700, maximum 20 years of service, and the highest age multiplier of 1.5 weeks per year.
You qualify for statutory redundancy pay if you’ve been employed continuously for at least 2 years, are legally classed as an employee (not self-employed), and your job has genuinely been made redundant. You must not have unreasonably refused suitable alternative employment offered by your employer.
The first £30,000 of redundancy pay is tax-free. This includes both statutory redundancy pay and any additional redundancy pay from your employer. Any amount over £30,000 is subject to income tax and National Insurance contributions.
Your employer cannot pay you less than the statutory minimum redundancy pay. If they do, you can make a claim to an employment tribunal within 3 months of your employment ending. Many employers offer enhanced redundancy packages that exceed the statutory minimum.
Yes, this calculator automatically applies the statutory weekly pay cap of £700 (as of April 2026). If your actual weekly pay exceeds this amount, the calculator uses the capped figure in line with current UK employment law.
