Standard 4.0 Grade Scale

The letter-grade to grade-point conversion used by this calculator. This is the most common US-style unweighted scale — always check your own institution’s official scale, as some use different values or a 5-point honours scale.

GPA Calculator FAQ

Everything students ask before calculating their semester or cumulative GPA.

Each letter grade is converted to a grade point on a 4.0 scale (an A is typically worth 4.0, a B 3.0, and so on), then multiplied by the credit hours for that course to get quality points. GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the total number of credit hours attempted.

Semester GPA only reflects the courses taken in a single term. Cumulative GPA reflects every graded credit hour taken so far, across all terms. To get a new cumulative GPA, the current semester’s quality points are added to all previous quality points, and the current semester’s credits are added to all previous credits attempted.

Usually not. Most institutions exclude Pass/Fail (P/F), Withdrawn (W), Incomplete (I), and audited courses from the GPA calculation, though the credit hours may still count toward your degree. Always check your own institution’s academic policy, since treatment of these grades varies.

There is no single official conversion, since institutions set their own grading scales, but a common rough guide is that a 4.0 GPA corresponds to roughly 90-100%, a 3.0 to roughly 80-89%, a 2.0 to roughly 70-79%, and a 1.0 to roughly 60-69%. Check your school’s official grade scale for an exact mapping.

An unweighted GPA treats every course the same regardless of difficulty, capping grade points at 4.0. A weighted GPA gives extra grade points, often up to 5.0, for honors, Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate courses, to reflect their added difficulty. This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.

This depends heavily on context, but as a general guide a 3.5 GPA or above is often considered strong, 3.0-3.49 is solid and typical, and many scholarships or graduate programs set minimum thresholds around 3.0. Some competitive programs expect closer to 3.7 or higher, so it’s best to check the specific requirements you’re aiming for.
