Fixed Deposit Calculator FAQ

Everything Indian FD investors ask before choosing between monthly payout and cumulative deposits in 2026.

For a monthly payout (non-cumulative) fixed deposit, the bank pays simple interest every month instead of compounding it. Monthly interest is calculated as principal multiplied by the annual interest rate, divided by 12. Your principal stays untouched and is returned in full at maturity.

In a non-cumulative (monthly payout) FD, interest is paid out to you at regular intervals and does not earn further interest. In a cumulative FD, interest is compounded, usually quarterly, and reinvested into the deposit, so you receive a single lump sum, principal plus compounded interest, at maturity. Cumulative FDs generally yield a slightly higher effective return because of compounding.

Yes. Banks in India deduct TDS at 10% if your total interest income from fixed deposits with that bank exceeds the exemption threshold in a financial year, with a higher threshold for senior citizens. If your PAN is not linked, TDS may be deducted at a higher rate. You can claim a refund at the time of filing your income tax return if your total taxable income is below the applicable slab.

If you need a regular income stream, a monthly payout (non-cumulative) FD is usually the better fit, since interest is credited to your savings account every month. If you don’t need the income immediately and want to maximise your final corpus, a cumulative FD, where interest compounds and is paid at maturity, typically produces a higher total return over the same tenure.

Yes. For cumulative FDs, more frequent compounding (monthly or quarterly) produces a slightly higher maturity value than less frequent compounding (half-yearly or annually) at the same nominal interest rate, because interest itself starts earning interest sooner. Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly by default.

Most Indian banks and NBFCs offer senior citizens an additional 0.25% to 0.75% per annum over the regular FD rate, depending on the bank and tenure. This calculator lets you enter your own bank’s quoted rate directly, so you can plug in the senior citizen rate if it applies to you.
