KDP Royalty Calculator FAQ
Everything you need to know about Amazon KDP royalties, pricing strategies, and maximizing your publishing earnings.
For the 70% royalty option, Amazon pays you 70% of the eBook’s list price minus a delivery cost. The delivery cost is calculated based on your file size (in megabytes) multiplied by the delivery rate for your marketplace (e.g., $0.15 per MB in the US). Formula: (List Price × 0.70) – (File Size × Delivery Rate).
The 70% option gives you a higher percentage of the sale price but deducts a delivery cost based on file size. It is only available for eBooks priced between $2.99 and $9.99 in specific marketplaces. The 35% option gives you 35% of the list price with zero delivery costs, making it ideal for books priced below $2.99 or above $9.99, or for large file sizes like heavily illustrated books.
KDP paperbacks have a fixed 60% royalty rate. Your royalty is calculated as 60% of the list price minus the printing cost. The printing cost includes a fixed base cost plus a per-page cost depending on whether the book is black & white or color. Formula: (List Price × 0.60) – Printing Cost.
Delivery costs depend on the Amazon marketplace where the book is sold. For the US marketplace, it is $0.15 per megabyte (MB). For the UK, it is £0.10 per MB. Delivery costs only apply if you choose the 70% royalty option; the 35% option has no delivery fees.
You should choose the 35% option if your eBook is priced below $2.99 or above $9.99, as the 70% option is not available for these prices. Additionally, if your file size is very large (e.g., over 10MB with many images), the delivery costs deducted from the 70% royalty might make the 35% option more profitable.
KDP printing costs consist of a fixed cost plus a variable per-page cost. For a standard black & white paperback on Amazon.com, the formula is: $0.80 + ($0.0125 × number of pages). For example, a 200-page B&W book costs $0.80 + $2.50 = $3.30 to print. Color books have a higher fixed and per-page rate. You can enter this total printing cost into the calculator.
