Shades EQ Hair Gloss FAQ
Everything you need to know about mixing, applying, and maintaining your Redken Shades EQ gloss.
Redken Shades EQ is mixed in a 1:1 ratio. This means you use equal parts of Shades EQ color and Shades EQ Processing Solution (or your chosen developer). For example, 2 oz of color requires 2 oz of developer.
Yes, you can use a 10 volume or 7 volume creme developer in a 1:1 ratio if you are using Shades EQ Cream. However, for the original liquid Shades EQ, Redken highly recommends using the dedicated Shades EQ Processing Solution, as its acidic pH is specifically formulated to provide the signature glossy, conditioning finish.
For a standard gloss and tone refresh, process for 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature. For maximum gray coverage or more intense deposit, you can leave it on for up to 20 minutes. Processing time may vary slightly based on hair porosity.
No, Shades EQ is actually famous for being a conditioning, acidic hair gloss. Because it has a low pH (around 4.5), it helps to smooth the hair cuticle, add incredible shine, and improve the hair’s condition while depositing demi-permanent color.
As a general rule, a short bob requires about 2 oz of color (and 2 oz of developer), medium shoulder-length hair requires 4 oz, long chest-length hair requires 6 oz, and extra-long waist-length hair may require 8 oz or more.
