Topsoil FAQ

Learn more about calculating topsoil, choosing the right depth, and preparing your landscaping project.

To calculate topsoil, measure the length and width of your area, then determine the desired depth. Multiply Length × Width × Depth to get the volume. For example, a 10m² area needing 5cm (0.05m) of topsoil requires 0.5 cubic meters of soil.

For a new lawn, 10-15cm (4-6 inches) is ideal. For flower beds and general gardening, 15-20cm (6-8 inches) is recommended. For vegetable patches or heavy root crops, 20-30cm (8-12 inches) provides the best growing conditions.

Standard topsoil typically weighs about 1,200 kg per cubic meter (1.2 tonnes/m³) or roughly 100 lbs per cubic foot. The exact weight varies based on moisture content and soil composition; sandy soils are heavier, while organic compost is significantly lighter.

Calculate your total volume and convert it to weight using the soil density. Then, divide the total weight by the bag size. For example, if you need 100kg of soil and buy 20kg bags, you will need exactly 5 bags. Always round up to account for settling and spillage.

For small projects, raised beds, or container gardening, bags are more convenient and easier to handle. For large landscaping projects, new lawns, or covering over half a cubic yard (or 0.5 cubic meters), buying bulk topsoil by the truckload is significantly more cost-effective.
